Nature Deficit Disorder

Urban life lived in a digital world disconnects us from nature. This is especially true of children in richer countries raised on TV, video games, tablets, smart phones and live increasingly in a virtual world created by humans mostly for commercial profit.  After years of worrying about attention deficit disorder – an inability for sustained concentration brought about by the instant sound bites of TV and electronic advertising the disconnection from nature is being described as nature deficit disorder,  Jeremy Williams introduces the concept in this blog “What is nature deficit disorder?” He offers the definition:

“Nature Deficit Disorder describes the human costs of alienation from nature, among them: diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, and higher rates of physical and emotional illnesses.”

Two other related Williams’ blogs are “Project Wild Thing” and “Learning with Nature”.
