THE LIMITS TO GROWTH

A REPORT FOR
THE CLUB OF ROME’S PROJECT ON
THE PREDICAMENT OF MANKIND
Donella H. Meadows
Dennis L. Meadows
Jorgen Randers
William W. Behrens III

This report produced over 4 decades ago was the first to use a sophisticated computer mode to explore how five interlocking growth trends (population; industrial output; resource depletion; environmental degradation; food supply) would eventually reach the limits of the earth’s capacity to sustain them.  The model predicted that these limits would be reached in the early decades of the 21st century, the precise period that we are now living in.

The report and its sequels are summarised in this presentation that looks at the main issues 40 years after the seminal work was published. The least desirable of 12 scenarios of the future sketched in the original report was called “Business as usual” meaning no long-term forward political planning to prevent ‘overshoot’. Sadly this model still prevails.
