Article on Thinking Globally; acting locally;

SEA-T Aim: To explore common shared interest in ecological issues, including existential threats to the planet (Spaceship Earth) and how the SEA-T group can raise awareness and become active for promoting sustainable local living, global thinking and building psychological resilience in Tychy in times of global system stress.

 The ”Spaceship Earth” Introductory Workshop

The Earth is Full In the workshop future scenarios are explored to emphasise the urgency of taking ‘glocal’ action, of behaving as ‘global citizens’ or ‘glocal agents’ dedicated to sustaining a healthy planet.

The inter-disciplinary science findings about human impact and a sustainable future are not cheerful, so it is important to encourage a sense of agency in the minds of students, a belief that they really can become ‘doctors’ who can help heal the planet in a whole variety of ways or, using the Spaceship metaphor, help to maintain a safe operating space (SOS) for the passengers. Every small step made for SOS by individuals and communities can  build hope and make a difference. The natural idealism of young people when combined with a concern for their own future offers great potential once released.

More ‘GLOCAL’ presentations

Encouragingly since 2014 there has been a wide spread of activism much of which is featured on this website. The student strike4climate events starting in late 2018 or the Extinction Rebellion direct action have spread worldwide. Locally in southern Poland, I have continued to make slide presentations, for example at Climate Hub, COP24 in Katowice, and I have joined activists in my town of Tychy in an effort to share the metaphor of a finite Spaceship Earth that requires us to behave like caring astronauts rather than reckless cowboys or consumers who think there are no limits to growth!
